28-year-old is now Japan's youngest mayor
It was the birth of the youngest mayor in Japan. Shuhei Azuma, a 28-year-old former member of the Foreign Ministry, which handles the nation's diplomacy, won a mayoral election in Shijonawate, Osaka Prefecture.
The mayoral race was contested between Azuma and the 61-year-old incumbent, who was seeking a second term. Using the phrase "I want to change the city into a new Shijonawate" in his campaign, Azuma made an appeal to voters with his intention to strengthen support for education and child-rearing and make the city a place where women can be more actively engaged in society.
After being elected, Azuma braced himself for the work, saying: "Today we're standing at the line. I want to do my job with the help of all the citizens' strength and wisdom."
People aged 25 or order are eligible to run for mayor. The 35-year-old mayor of Yubari, Hokkaido, was previously the youngest incumbent mayor, but Azuma is younger. The youngest in history is the mayor of Musashimurayama, Tokyo, who won an election in 1994 at the age of 27.
課題2
日本記録を更新する:break the national record
〜に引き取られる:be taken in by ...
絶滅危惧種:endangered species
海に放つ:release into the sea
A turtle has laid eggs producing as many as 2,778 babies in about 20 years!
The mother loggerhead turtle at the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium in Nagoya has broken the national record with the number of her hatchings.
Her name is Rokuban, meaning No. 6. She was caught in a fishing net off Shizuoka Prefecture in 1991, and taken in by the aquarium. Since 1996, the turtle has laid eggs one to five times almost every year. The number of layings has now reached a total of 51.
Loggerhead turtles are designated an endangered species that could disappear from Japan. The aquarium has been organizing an event to release captive-bred baby turtles into the sea with local primary school students, hoping people learn more about the turtles.
"She's energetic, so I think she will also bear many baby turtles this year," said Tsuyoshi Matsuda, a 47-year-old aquarium keeper responsible for the turtle.
